Google’s Panda Algorithm News

An algorithm is an ever-changing formula developed for search engines which decides the order that websites are indexed upon searches. This constantly evolving algorithm uses data collected by actual human ratings of what makes websites trustworthy.
Thousands of websites were rated by experts on the basis of many factors. Some questions that were considered include whether the articles are duplicated, if the content is original and whether the author seems to be an authority on the topics written about.
Grammar and spelling errors are even taken into consideration upon the rating of these websites by the panel of experts. The computer’s program then bases rankings in search engines on these factors.
The Panda Algorithm is the most recent of these formulas that Google depends upon to form the website page ranking order. First developed in February 2011, there have been many more additional tweaks made for search improvements. Taking into consideration what makes a website trustworthy now can help your website achieve better search results.
From a website design standpoint, the new factors taken into consideration gives a basis on which to create website content for my clients. I give thought to the trustability of the content, providing topics that readers would have genuine interest in, and whether I would trust the website with my credit card information. The algorithms are not just beginning to think like website critiquing experts, but have been for a long time now.

Search Google Using Images

Now you can search the internet in an entirely new way by starting your search with an image. This could revolutionize how we search online by not only using text, but now Google’s search engines can “see” a photo and index similar photos that match your search.
Go to the Google search engine, and at the top left are tabs for different types of Google searches. The one labeled ‘Images’ is the one you need to click on. (photo left, click to enlarge)
Once there, if you notice at the right of the search bar there is a camera icon that reads ‘search by image’ if you hover over it with your mouse cursor. You can either click that then paste the image url or upload from your computer. Even easier, you could just drop the image into the search box.

I just conducted a test by using a screen shot of a pool table from Yahoo Pool. I saved the photo to my desktop, and when I dropped the image into the search box, immediately images from Yahoo Pool were indexed with 129 similar image results. This tool could prove to be rather useful depending on your search needs, but now there is the option to search with a photo instead of having to type in phrases.
Once you conduct a search on an image, you can then refine your search by entering a descriptive word in the search box.

Google Indexes Facebook Comments

Any of the comments that you make on fan pages or public posts with the Facebook Comments social plugin can now be indexed by Google. Will this affect how you post considering that your comments may be indexed? Although Google isn’t violating any privacy laws by doing this, we may see more censoring on the social media website.
If your profile is private then the Googlebots won’t be able to index your comments, however postings in fanpages can be traced back to you by Google. The content was already public, Google just made it much easier to find.
Had you been cautious of your postings and do not mind having them tied to your name, you probably don’t have a problem with the change.
Not only is Facebook is being watched by Google, but Google can now index AJAX and JavaScript content on websites with Facebook comments built in. This means anything posted in a forum or public page can now be easily found with Google’s search engine.
What this means from a website designer’s perspective is that I see the potential for more non-deceptive means of advertising using social media to promote one’s business. If Google is indexing content from Facebook and other websites forum posts, this is an opportunity to gain more website visitors just by being more active in these online communities.
Google’s all seeing eye is peering into the far corners of the internet, so be careful what you comment and watch what you say. Make some postings about your business and now you just may get indexed for them.
Blogging Equals More Traffic

I recently discovered a pleasant trend occurring in the statcounter statistics for the traffic on one of the websites I monitor and write for. From the graph on the left, (click to enlarge by the way) we notice the trend remained flat until shortly after I started writing for the website in June.
Before June the number of unique visitors peaked at around 50 per day where now the minimum per day is around 200, even peaking at 1,184 hits on March 21st. The key to acquiring more customers is building website traffic, and in this case I provide proof that blogging on a regular basis does just that.
Add content to your website regularly to provide search engines with more incentive to direct websurfers to your site. Search engines prefer a website that grows, so by adding more pages with blog posts, you offer a healthier online presence. Blogging also offers you the opportunity to advertise your business for free. All you need is some time to write and some ideas to write about.

Google Real Time Search Engine

Google has recently launched a realtime search engine integrated into their search results showing information as it is posted online. The updates include information from sources such as news articles, Yahoo Answers, Twitter tweets, Facebook updates, MySpace announcements and much more. The Google realtime results can be paused, and there is even a scroll bar to review other recent results. You can even use real time search results on your mobile phone.
Google has linked partnerships with both Facebook and MySpace so that data can be streamed for any publicly available posts. This is in addition to the partnership they announced with Twitter in October 2010.
Google determines whether a search is worthy of having realtime results associated with it. When high quality information comes in, then Google will show it. In other words, if Google thinks something has some “realtime” component to it, the search engine will show the section. If Google sees a spike in information on a certain topic or queries on a topic, it assumes there is a realtime situation occurring.
You can even go to Google Realtime and set alerts for real time search results, allowing you to view up-to-the-second news articles, blog posts and social media updates about hot topics around the globe. Google’s real time search engine in coordination with Google Instant Results gives the user a simple experience searching online.

The E-mail’s More Deadly Than the Mail
Email is a commonly vulnerable place to pick up computer viruses, unlike the snail-mail you pick up in your mailbox outside. These attacks are becoming more prevalent lately than in past years. Webcams, instant messanger and email are some common ports a potential hacker could find a way into your computer. Keeping a safeguard on these vulnerable accesses is important to protect you from potential attacks.
Never accept a file through instant messenger unless you know the sender very well. Only open email messages that are from those you know that aren’t marked spam. Even on facebook you can get infected simply opening a message from the wrong person. Many times those on your friends list will pick up a bug and unknowingly pass it onto all their friends.
There is approximately one ID theft every 2 seconds, and you could report hackers and ID theft to get these statistics decreased. Keep your antivirus software up to date as well to fend off possible intruders. Don’t bother opening up junk mail on your email either, I usually just empty the whole folder after a quick visual scan.
Don’t be surprised when I tell you that a virus can be transmitted through email disguised as just about anything, including photos and music. Each email service provider uses different file scans for protection from potential risks, but filter your email appropriately anyway. The next time you go to either mailbox, make sure you realize that the e-mail, is more deadly than the mail.

Google Instant search is changing search engines with faster, more accurate search results. Your website search streams results in real time as you type each letter, therefore giving you the power to scan matches as you complete the search. Google has stated this predictive search could increase productivity at work by saving an average of 2 to 5 seconds per query.
The Google search engine even gives you the option to turn Instant off if you’re uncomfortable with it. If you don’t have Google Instant Results yet it should be available to you soon being Google intends to make the feature available to users across the globe.
Blogging for Business or Pleasure
The differences between writing on a blog for your business or just writing for personal reasons revolve around the need to be indexed by search engines. Obviously when writing for a business website, you want to generate traffic in order to attract potential customers. Writing for a personal blog, you can use less formal language and be less concerned about keywords, tags and labels.
Whether writing for your company or for personal purposes, you should speak casually but professionally to your audience. Write about topics that interest you and are knowledgable about in either instance. The focus on SEO isn’t as important writing for personal purposes as writing for business. Focus on keywords in the title, use appropriate tags and labels, and keep the topics closely related to your own occupation.
When writing for your business blog, you need to focus more on writing about subjects that are involved within your business niche. A personal blog doesn’t need SEO to generate traffic, because there is no product or service being sold. With your company blog, you may have to pay to have it optimized for search engines. Gear your writing to whether you have a personal blog or a company blog. Know the difference and adjust your writing accordingly.
