Review of Free Word Processor to Replace Notepad

Review of Software to Code HTML, CSS, and Javascript

Our choice for creating custom websites for small business owners is hand coding in XHTML with CSS. For web developers who hand code, including development of PHP or Javascript, this review covers a great free word processor to replace Notepad.

The original NotePad word processor that comes bundled with most Windows programs is free, yet it has not changed much since it was first introduced more than 10 years ago. Our software for coding html, xhtml, javascript, and css is a NotePad clone entitled GridinSoft NotePad Lite from Wisdom-Soft.

The freeware version is perfectly suited for professional results because of the advanced features as shown in the graphic below (taken from this actual page).

Two graphic options that make coding easier are the left gutter with line numbers and a top ruler for counting characters per line. Any time you view code for creating websites and need to discuss or debug a certain chunk of code, it's always easier if you can refer or bookmark by line number.

Notice the color coding in the graphic which has enhanced features compared to Notepad, and easily allows you to find code errors. Counting the characters in a line is important when writing code for your website description and keywords. Search engines and some web directories have preferred line length restrictions that may be easily tested with the ruler.

Download the free version of GridinSoft NotePad Lite here. Learning about HTML code will be so much easier later on if you install this great free software program now.
